Legendary US women’s hockey player and sports hero Cammi Granato and FlipGive have teamed up to launch a $500 grant to help 21 US girls between the ages of 4-12 get back onto the ice this season by helping families with registration fees and other hockey costs.

“Growing up in a busy household of 6 kids, the cost of the sport with both registrations and equipment fees were always a challenge for my family. It’s more important than ever that we help encourage girls to develop a passion for the game at a young age, and that starts with getting out onto the ice and letting them fall in love with the sport.” says Cammi Granato.

To support this initiative the NHL, NHLPA and Pure Hockey, who believe strongly in growing the girls game, will provide the 21 grant winners with an additional equipment donation of approximately $300 in value, helping ensure players get into the ice with equipment that fits great and keeps them safe.

Access to great coaching is also a crucial part of the hockey experience. The Coaches Site, an organization helping over 7,000 coaches improve the game around the world, are pleased to provide the head coach of the 21 teams with 12 months of access to all the amazing drills and content on their site, a value of $120.

Cammi adds “I’m excited to be working with FlipGive and to have the generous support of the NHL, NHLPA, Pure Hockey and The Coaches Site to have a positive impact on girls hockey this season.”

The positive impact of sports is tremendous for kids, as new friendships are created, confidence is discovered, and teamwork and leadership skills are improved with each day on the ice together. Ernst & Young research from 2018 showed an incredible 94% of women who hold C-suite level positions are former athletes, showing that sports builds the next generation of business and community leaders.

“We learned from a recent survey of FlipGive parents that 75% were concerned about fewer community fundraising options as small businesses were impacted by COVID, with over 30% of families feeling they would need financial assistance to return to the game. We are excited to be working with Cammi, who believes strongly in making the wonderful game of hockey accessible for girls everywhere”, Sam Menard, FlipGive VP Growth (and U11 girls hockey coach).
